Our history

Our purpose

Carène is the name of one of the 88 constellations in the sky. Richard de Tscharner chose this name for his foundation to point out the importance of gaining height and thus a broader perspective on our planet, its realities and needs.

In retrospect, the values that have guided Richard de Tscharner’s life journey are education as well as a respect for traditions and cultures of the world, hence his desire to promote the transmission of knowledge and the preservation of cultural roots.

why & when

creation

Aware that knowledge had always been transmitted by our ancestors and conscious of the inestimable legacy of those who have gone before us, Richard de Tscharner created the Carène Foundation back in 2008, to support the transmission of knowledge and the preservation of cultural roots.

By teaming up with Factum Arte in Nigeria to preserve the Cross-River Monoliths from destruction and raise awareness among the population so that this legacy of the past is respected

By offering a new vehicle to the CIOMAL foundation for its leprosy campaign in Cambodia

By helping needy and disabled children become responsible adults through the Krousar Thmey project

By funding the publication of Christ in the mirror of contemporary photography, a doctoral thesis by Nathalie Diestchy analysing the diversity of Christ’s faces

By contributing to the construction of the Him Shikar Carène Ustinov School, thereby completing the challenging mission undertaken by Paul Metzener and Käthi Flümann to reshape the destiny of the Nepalese community of Nehle

By safeguarding a unique textile collection housed in the Ixchel Museum, thereby helping to preserve the fragile heritage of Maya culture in Guatemala

By providing support to the Alexandrie la Divine exhibit and book, which showcase the rich Alexandrian heritage that largely influenced Christianity, Judaism and Islam, as well as the scientists and scholars who built the foundations of our civilisation

To contribute safeguarding a unique collection of manuscripts in the Saint Catherine Monastery on the foothills of the Mount Sinai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

By preserving Haiti’s past memory through a restoration project of the archives of the Court in Cap-Haitian

By promoting the preservation of Cambodian shadow theatre, a cultural tradition used to convey messages to Khmer communities with high illiteracy rates

Our commitment to educational values has recently led us:

To support the Bourbaki Panorama, installed in 1889, which illustrates the community spirit, the humanitarian tradition and the neutrality of Switzerland

To ensure that Bakor monoliths are well understood by the local population and that this unique cultural heritage in Cross River State, Nigeria is well preserved

To fund a new SUV to enable the CIOMAL Foundation team to conduct early detection campaigns throughout Cambodia to combat leprosy and help those affected to have a decent life
